Gere, researching a role he will play in the film "The Flock," spent about four hours with deputies last week going door-to-door to check on registered sex offenders.

Two weeks after having surgery for breast cancer, Maria Friedman will open Thursday - as scheduled - in "The Woman in White," the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical based on Wilkie Collins' Victorian mystery novel.

Friedman started preview performances Oct. 28 at Broadway's Marquis Theatre, but left the show six days later after discovering a lump in her left breast. She returned to the musical last Thursday, missing only a week of performances. During her absence, understudy Lisa Brescia played the role of Marian Holcombe, the musical's adventurous heroine.

Friedman, in an interview with the New York Times, said she would begin radiation treatments in December. "I'm not going for hero status," the actress told the newspaper. "I'm doing what I can do, with enormous support."

Moviegoers probably won't have to dodge bullets after seeing "Walk the Line," about Johnny Cash. This one's getting great reviews - just not from Kathy Cash, one of the country legend's five children.

People magazine says Kathy was so upset at how her mother, Vivian Liberto Distin, Johnny's first wife, was depicted in the film that she walked out of a private screening - five times.

"My mom was basically a nonentity in the entire film except for the mad little psycho who hated his career. That's not true. She loved his career and was proud of him until he started taking drugs and stopped coming home," Kathy Cash said.

The Man in Black's daughter must have seen enough of the film to judge the acting, though. She praised the performances of Joaquin Phoenix, as her dad, and Reese Witherspoon as his second wife, June Carter Cash. Johnny Cash died Sept. 12, 2003, at 71.

For those who were disappointed by Jessica Alba's prim stripper character in "Sin City" (and by "prim," it means she kept her clothes on), take heart.

The men's mag staple says she's willing to reconsider her stand against doffing her duds onscreen, but only for the right role - and only if her dad doesn't find out.
