A Tarrant County jury convicted a former teacher and church youth group leader of sexual assault - and the same panel is deliberating whether to give him probation or a prison term.
Jason Scott Wamsley, 32, will have to register as a sex offender following his conviction Wednesday on charges of sexual assault of a child and having an improper relationship with a student.
Mr. Wamsley's attorney, Don Gandy, asked jurors to grant the former teacher community supervision, saying his client is a good man who made poor decisions.
"This is not a bad person," Mr. Gandy said. "This is a person that has hope. There are such things as second chances. There are such things as redemption. There are such things as turning your life around."
The teacher and student had more than 60 sexual encounters at church, at Mr. Wamsley's home and in the girl's bedroom between 2003 and 2004, prosecutors said.
Mr. Gandy accused prosecutors of "overselling" the case. He described Mr. Wamsley as a doting father to his two children and an attentive husband.
"Not a single defense witness took the stand and said this man is sorry for his actions," Assistant Tarrant County District Attorney Bill Vassar said.
