After finding fame in the Wonderbra ad, she was dubbed the Marilyn of the 1990s, but in 2003 she sparked controversy when she shed her famous curves and appeared gaunt and ill at a New York fashion party, forcing her to deny media rumours of anorexia.

Some things have had to go, though. "Before, I could run in high heels - I never had problems. But suddenly your balance changes. I keep falling off them."

Herzigova is embracing her physical transformation, with none of the preciousness you might expect from a woman whose career depends on conforming to the skinny ideal.

She has no intention of following the example of German model Heidi Klum, who modelled lingerie on the Victoria's Secret's catwalk just weeks after giving birth to her second child.

She doesn't have any plans to marry her boyfriend, whom she met in 2001, when her plane back to New York was grounded in Italy after the attack on the Twin Towers.
