Judge David Garner of the 10th State District Court sentenced Sydney Michael Roach, 50, to seven years' probation after a four-hour hearing. Roach had pleaded guilty to all 14 counts, each of which carried a possible prison term of two to 10 years.

In January 2006, the Internet service Yahoo! provider reported possibly unlawful images to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The center sent the information to a statewide cybercrime police task force in Dallas. Police there referred the case to the Texas Attorney General's Office, which investigated and traced the images to a home computer in Friendswood.

Authorities seized Roach's computer and found 179 nude images of preteen and teenage boys. Some were in lewd poses, but some of the photographs showed boys engaged in sex acts.

Prosecutor Kayla Allen, who asked the judge to send Roach to prison, showed some of the images and also produced two text stories about men having sex with young boys from Roach's computer.

Under the terms of his probation, Roach must serve 60 days in the county jail. He cannot own a computer. He must also attend sex-offender counseling and avoid contact with children younger than 17.
