AHMEDABAD:In a Hindi-medium school in Ahmedabad recently, a girl student, during a sessionon sexuality education, asked quite innocently — "Can a girl get pregnantby kissing?"

But all suchqueries have been silenced. Three years after launching an initiative to teachsexuality and adolescent education to Class IX and Class XI students, the stategovernment banned the books on these subjects in February saying they were"obscene" What the political masters were probably talking about were the nudesketches (mind you, not pictures) showing the anatomy changes of the male andfemale body through adolescence contained in the manual meant for teachers andthe teaching aid — a chart used to explain it to the students.

This 'Adolescent EducationProgram'was developed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, NationalAIDS Control Organisation and UNICEF and had been adopted by Gujarat Council forEducational Research and Training (GCERT).

Sources connected with thesubject said, "There were some religious groups who protested against thisprogramme which was meant for all the schools of Gujarat. This group of peoplehad agitated since they found the teaching material obscene".
