With Dina Matos McGreevey preparing to launch a tour supporting her new memoir, her estranged husband, former Gov. James E. McGreevey, wants a judge to keep their daughter from participating in the book-release publicity.
"Dina and I both desire what is in the best interest of our daughter," McGreevey said in an interview with last night. "I am asking the court for greater direction and guidance."
McGreevey, who resigned in a gay sex scandal in 2004, is also asking a judge to ensure he is not cut off from his child because of Matos McGreevey's "seemingly irrational fears" about his sexual orientation, according to his motion filed last week in Superior Court in Elizabeth.
His motion seeks a temporary order that would grant him more overnight visitation with 5-year-old Jacqueline; assign a "parenting coordinator" to mediate visitation and other child-rearing decisions between the McGreeveys; and keep Jacqueline out of the spot light that will shine on Matos McGreevey once her book is re leased May 1.
McGreevey is seeking a temporary order that would remain in ef fect until a final divorce decree and custody order are signed. The latest motion does not address the issue of support.
On Feb. 20, McGreevey filed an amended divorce complaint seek ing custody and child support. Matos McGreevey's attorney has asked the court for a one-month extension to file a response.
In the new filing, McGreevey accused his estranged wife of having the child be part of publicity interviews for the forthcoming book "Si lent Partner: A Memoir of My Marriage." The girl has been taken to the set of "Good Morning America," been in Kelly Ripa's dressing room on the set of "Live with Kelly and Regis," and joined Matos McGreevey when she met for coffee with ABC newswoman Diane Sawyer, the former governor said in the court papers.
"Jacqueline should not be taken on any publicity tours," McGreevey said in the motion. "Jacqueline should not be involved in any media or publicity events related to either of the books written by the parties. Jacqueline will not accompany either parent to any book fairs, book signings, interviews or to such events where she may be subject to publicity."
When McGreevey signed ex cerpts of his own memoir, "The Confession," during national expo sition in Washington, D.C., last year, the child traveled with the ex- governor but did not attend the public events, McGreevey said at the time.
In his motion, McGreevey also claims Matos McGreevey has not told him about his daughter's medical tests or absences from preschool, and has complained about artwork in his home, even demanding that one nude photograph be removed.
In February, Matos McGreevey issued a statement, saying "We continue to have profound differences about what our daughter should be exposed to."
Among other things, McGree vey wants to be able to take the girl to Australia, where partner Mark O'Donnell's parents live, and to continue to teach her to swim in the pool at the home he shares with O'Donnell. McGreevey has said he and O'Donnell want to enter a civil union once the divorce is final.
