Diego Fernandez-Davila, 20, was arrested Sunday as part of a weeklong undercover Polk County Sheriff's Office operation set up to nab people who commit Internet crimes against children, according to a sheriff's office press release.
Operation Cyber Hawk led Polk County detectives to arrest 28 suspects, including Fernandez-Davila, after the detectives posed as minors on the Internet, the release stated.
In the Fernandez-Davila case, an undercover officer created an online screen name with the profile of a 14-year-old girl named "Carson," according to the arrest report.
On Saturday, Fernandez-Davila used his screen name, "Olskoolplaya520," to ask for nude pictures and phone sex with the person he believed to be a 14-year-old girl, according to the report. He also sent four photographs of his penis, the report stated.
Then, according to authorities, Fernandez-Davila arranged a meeting with the officer he thought was a minor so that they could have "real sex." He was arrested after arriving at the meeting place, according to the report.
Fernandez-Davila was charged with solicitation of a minor via the Internet, transmission of material harmful to a minor via the Internet and attempted lewd battery on a child, according to the report. All charges are felonies.
According to the sheriff's office press release, one in seven American children are sexually solicited online, but only 10 percent of those cases are reported to authorities.
UF administrators are aware of Fernandez-Davila's case and will look into judicial proceedings, said Paige Crandall, associate dean of students. She said that while this case appears fairly clear-cut, the administration has to gather a lot of information before they decide the appropriate punishment.
