SARATOGA SPRINGS -- While some families gathered this week to give thanks and celebrate, Marsha Van Ness was reminded of her grief: Friday marked the 25th anniversary of her daughter's murder, which remains unsolved.
Sheila Shepherd was found dead, nude and tied to her bed with a knife stuck in her abdomen, on Nov. 25, 1980, in her apartment at 125 Church St.
Police never released a confirmation or denial of rape to the press, although Shepherd's father insisted in several accounts published in The Saratogian that there was no evidence of a sex crime.
The story published in January, Van Ness said, connected the dots for one reader who told her son James, Sheila's younger brother, that the reader thought he knew who killed Sheila.
'If you have a case like that, unless there is new information, if there was some DNA evidence and you could run it through the national database, it gets to the point where you don't have any leads to follow,' Forward said.
